Small Steps, Big Results

On some days, it’s a challenge to feel optimistic. Daily life often has difficulties, and news reports about local and worldwide problems can feel overwhelming.

To help improve my outlook and to support my family’s wellbeing this year, I’ve tried to focus on the things I can control. Here are some of the small steps I’ve taken in 2023: little habits and changes that have yielded the biggest results.

New habits

Short hikes – My family lives in an area with many biking and walking trails. When I need to recharge, I often go for a walk on these trails. Even a half-hour outing helps improve mental health.

Careful choices – In 2023 I’ve been more careful about choosing books, shows, and movies that enrich my life and my mood. The same idea goes for people: in general, I spend more time with those who are considerate and hopeful.

Giving room – Living and working in close quarters during the pandemic has taught me to be more aware of people’s need for physical and mental space. When I see a family member quietly working or watching a show, I avoid interrupting and choose a better time to ask my question.

Small, shared deadlines – In the past, my family didn’t always communicate or plan well. We’d forget to discuss priorities and ideas for the weekend ahead of time, and inevitably someone would be disappointed. Now, my husband and I use a shared program (see Resources, below) to collaborate on meal planning, chore lists, and other things. We check in with each other to keep on track: for example on Thursday we discuss the meals we want to make during the week ahead and, early on Saturday mornings, we finalize our weekend plans.

Self-Awareness – During 2023 I’ve become better at recognizing when I need to take a break. One resource I use is an app and program (see Resources, below) that teaches how to be aware of and improve mood, and ways to reframe challenges. If I’m feeling anxious, for example, I refer back to a meditation that helps me re-center and get a broader perspective.

Try again

Forgiveness – Another thing that I’ve become better at is forgiving myself when things don’t go as planned. I remind myself to simply try again, and that I am making headway, even if it isn’t as fast as I’d like.

During this year, I’ve become more accepting that family life – and life in general – is very much a work in progress, and that many things can be improved over time.
