Inspiring Children to Contribute to Their School
When I was around 10 my school librarian and favorite teachers gave me a wonderful opportunity. They allowed me to help them organize their room, do light clerical tasks, and ask them questions about almost anything.
When I became a teacher and librarian, I followed that earlier example: I opened my doors to students who wished to help in the classroom.
Learning what teachers do
These behind-the-scenes moments of showing students the procedures and ‘ins and outs’ of my work help them understand the ‘why’ behind what teachers do. They even offer suggestions, and are so happy when I take their ideas and apply them.
During events like conferences and book fairs, parents and caregivers have shared their appreciation for their children’s help in the library and at school. Students enjoy contributing to the community through such work as stamping due date cards, unpacking new books, and putting up posters around the school.
It’s a proud moment when I hear my students tell friends and other teachers what they did to help make our school a better place.
